The Quick and Dirty Rules for Buying an Adjustable Mattress

adjustable mattressMost people who opt for adjustable beds need them because the flat mattress they already have just doesn’t cut it. If you notice that you’re waking up in the morning without feeling refreshed, or if chronic pain is keeping you up at night, then it may be time to make the switch.

But how can you make sure that you’re choosing the right adjustable mattress? Here are three quick and dirty rules to follow when you go shopping for an adjustable bed:

1. Ask yourself what you need out of an adjustable mattress.

Soft or firm? Small or large? These are questions you’ll need to ask yourself when choosing an adjustable mattress. Adjustable memory foam beds may offer more support, or you may prefer the softness of a pillow-top style bed. The sizes of adjustable beds available include twin, full, queen, and king, just like any other type of bed.

2. Consider who will sleep in the bed.

If you’re sleeping on your own, then the size of the bed won’t really matter. You can rest easy in a twin or double bed or spread out like a starfish in your own queen or king size adjustable bed. If you’re sleeping next to a partner, however, then you’ll need to think about what each of you needs. Some partners will both need to sleep upright, so they can get away with a bed with single controls. However, dual adjustable beds, which come in queen and king sizes, allow both partners to choose their own settings, so each side of the bed can adjust to the individual’s specific needs.

3. Don’t forget about additional features.

It’s not just the mattress itself that matters; it’s also about the extras that many types of adjustable beds offer. If you choose one of the Craftmatic® brand adjustable beds, for instances, you may be able to receive optional heat and massage functions for your mattress and bed base. These features can provide temporary relief from conditions such as low back pain, minor aches and pains due to muscular fatigue or overexertion, edema or swelling of the legs, poor local blood circulation of the legs, symptoms of hiatus hernia, nighttime heartburn, and symptoms of gastric reflux. Additionally, the heating accessory on its own may provide temporary relief from mild arthritis and joint pain, as well as muscle pain associated with stress and tension. Sleeping in an upright position, which adjustable beds allow for, may even reduce or ease light and occasional snoring.
