4 College Dorm Hacks to Maximize Your Space

It?s back-to-school time! That means thousands of college freshmen across the country are moving into their dorms for the first time. Since college dorms are typically smaller than students? bedrooms back at home, dorm living can be a major adjustment. Here are some dorm room design tips to maximize the space you do have.

  1. Loft your bed. Most dorm room beds can be raised so that you can utilize the space underneath. You can use that space for bookshelves, dorm room racks, or even your desk for a separate little study space.
  2. Portable drawer carts. Everything is better on wheels. With drawer carts that can be slid under the bed or rolled in and out of the closet, you will be able to keep some items tucked away when you don?t need them and still be able to locate anything you need at any time.
  3. DIY closet organizer. Your closet space will probably be limited, especially if you are sharing with a roommate. To optimize your closet usage, you can get all sorts of different types of organizers, from shoe racks to hanging cloth shelving; or, you can build your own! Another great trick for maximizing your closet space is to put soda can tabs on your hangers. You can then hang another hanger from the soda can tab to create a super useful double hanger.
  4. Wall hooks. Use your wall space wisely. This doesn?t mean plastering Justin Bieber posters from corner to corner. Rather, you can stick some damage-free hooks to the walls (the kind that are super sticky but peel right off) and hang all sorts of things like coats, keys, and even jewelry. Put these up in between your Justin Bieber posters if you must.

Adjusting to college life can be made a whole lot easier when you have a comfortable place to come home to after class. Do what you need to do to create a safe, homey space during this big period of change.
