Tis the season of giving, and there are many out there, especially our veterans, who could use a donation or two. It?s proven that more people, 43% to be exact, tend to donate during the holiday season than the rest of the year. There are many donation programs out there that help fund programs to help veterans get back on their feet, or put warm clothes on their backs.
Charitable donations to veterans are important, and many donations can be written off on taxes. For example, overcoats and suits for men are worth about a $60 tax write-off, while you can usually write of between $4 to $15 for coffee makers. It?s important to remember, though, that if you make a charitable donation worth $250 or more, you will need a receipt of proof to write it off on your taxes.
Donating things like old clothing and household items is also beneficial to the environment, as it encourages recycling. In fact, in 2006 alone, used-clothing purchases saved an estimated 2.5 billion pounds of fabric from going to landfills. Unfortunately, nearly 10.5 million tons of clothing still end up in our landfills each year because people tend to only donate about 15% of their used clothing items. Instead of donating perfectly good items, the average person just throws away nearly 70 pounds of clothing a year! That?s a lot of used clothes that could greatly benefit someone else, like a veteran, especially when you consider that almost 100% of clothing can be donated, regardless of condition!
So if you have a closet full of old items you no longer wear, or have any household items you?re thinking about getting rid of, consider making a few donations to veterans. This time of the year, there are many programs standing by waiting for people like you to donate, so finding charity foundations or charity organizations to take your items shouldn?t be too difficult.
